HOT DOG TIPS

Hot Dog Tips from Karen Johnson

Sometimes hot dogs can curl up when grilled making them difficult to fit into a roll. To prevent this, insert bamboo skewers (that have been soaked in water) lengthwise into each dog prior to grilling. When done grilling, just pull the skewers out.
For safety reasons (and to prevent a mess), prick the casing of a hot dog in several places before heating in the microwave. This will prevent any chance of them exploding.
To be sure your fire is medium-hot when grilling hot dogs, hold your hand 5 inches above the grill rack. If you can hold it there for 3 to 4 seconds, the fire is medium-hot.
If adding a topping of sauerkraut to your dog, try fresh sauerkraut from the refrigerated aisle; it adds more crunch and is often milder than canned sauerkraut.
When cooking hot dogs on the top of the stove, don't let the water boil; keep it at simmering so the dogs don't burst. This may take a bit longer but no one wants a water clogged dog that has split.
